Entra ID

We all know that Microsoft are on a mission to secure the world's data through identity security..

Three main areas of focus are:

Trustworthy Identity
Microsoft aims to establish a trusted identity framework that safeguards user data. By employing robust authentication measures, such as multi-factor authentication and biometrics, they ensure that only authorised individuals can access sensitive information.

Intelligent Threat Detection
Microsoft utilises advanced machine learning and artificial intelligence capabilities to detect and respond to potential security threats. By analysing user behaviour patterns and applying proactive security measures, they can identify anomalies and take prompt action to protect data.

Comprehensive Protection
Microsoft offers a comprehensive suite of security solutions to safeguard data at every level. They provide features such as data encryption, access controls, and data loss prevention mechanisms across their services and products, empowering organisations to maintain a high level of data security.

Previously Microsoft's flagship vessel for storing and authenticating identities was known as Azure Active Directory (named after the on-premise version, Active Directory, which emerged around the turn of the century).

Now to distinguish it from it's server-bound predecessor, it's to be known as Entra ID.

Entra ID incorporates ID Governance and External Identity (formerly B2B collaboration and AAD B2C, though more on the B2C saga in another post...)

Meanwhile Microsoft has lumped Verified ID, Permissions Management and Workload Identities in a new grouping called "New Identity Categories".

And finally under the Entra banner comes Microsoft's answer to the VPN: Entra Internet Access and Entra Private access.

There is a wealth of new product development going on, particularly in the Internet Access space, but Azure Active Directory is still the same robust tool, albeit with a new name.
